No Gods, No Kings, Only 'Mon

Twitch Plays Pokemon is a Twitch.tv stream where people could log in and simultaneously controll a single game of Pokemon. Commands input through chat are queued and performed in game in the order that they were input. This led to the character running around in circles, discarding items, and just outright doing things that a single person would not even consider during a normal playthrough.

During the first run of Twitch Plays Pokemon, an incredible lore was created in order to explain the events of the game as controlled by The Hivemind (all the players). In order to explain why Red constantly used the Helix Fossil, the community explained that he was consulting Lord Helix for guidance, as the voices in his head (The Hivemind) instructed.  In order to explain why Pidgeot had such a high level when compared to the other pokemon, the community explained that the bird was the Chosen Messiah of Helix, Bird Jesus.

As the game grew in popularity, more lore was created, until finally, The Hivemind defeated Blue (the final boss) and became champion. Red's final party consisted of Lord Helix the Omastar (a god), Bird Jesus the Pidgeot (a messiah), AA-J the Zapdos (an angel), Fonz the Nidoking (a king), Air Jordan (a prince), and All Terrain Venomoth (an all-terrain vehicle, the Dragonslayer).

The voices had been silenced.

24 hours later, TPP began a play through of the generation 2 title Pokemon Crystal. The main character, AJ Downs (AJDNNW, a name created by the haphazard input of commands) set off on his quest to become a Pokemon master. Not surprisingly, the community developed a lore around AJ's quest and eventually linked it to the lore of the original Pokemon Red.

The beginning of the lore creation for Crystal was off to a rough start. Whenever a common Pidgey (the most common pokemon in the game) would appear, players would burst out in "BIRD JESUS" and "Praise Helix" cries. The community had several discussions in the TPP subredit about whether to keep the old lore or start a new one. Amidst all the discussion, a lore naturally grew seemingly by itself.

Although there are different variations of the lore, they all contain certain key elements. All versions agree that the entire world knew of Red's quest, the Helix, and the schizophrenic champion of the Pokemon League. When the voices took over AJ, the world was ready to resist, and AJ most of all (this was used to explain why even though the hivemind would want to do things they would not happen in game due to control issues and others preventing them to happen). Because at the end of Pokemon Crystal  the player has to battle Red, the lore became that AJ and his Pokemon would rebel against the voices and seek out and destroy Lord Helix so that none may suffer under the influence of the voices. Another popular version explains that Lord Helix is guiding AJ to destroy Helix so that the The Helix may ascend and the world may be free of gods.

As the quest progressed, a lore was created that included both military themes and elements of humanity versus gods. With the starter Pokemon Totodile, The Hivemind went on in its quest. When Totodile reached a level when it could evolve, people would input the command to cancel, thus stopping the evolution. This went on for a while until eventually, after releasing a pokemon  nicknamed The Admiral, Totodile was allowed to evolve. Totodile saw how AJ treated his Pokemon when he succumbed to the voices, and thus decided that he would spare other Pokemon the misery by outright killing them. Because due to input Totodile would often use the move Leer, he was dubbed "Lazorgator", a name that stuck even after he lost the move (although Ferraligator became a popular alternate). Eventually, LazorGator and AJ decided to end it all by defeating Red, and so began their quest to reach Silver Mountain.

This is when things get complicated.

Red's final team in Crystal consists of Pikachu, Esperon, Snorlax, Charrizard, Blastoise, and Venusaur. This is not the team with which The Hivemind completed Pokemon Red. Through modifying the source of the game and some computer magic, the game's streamer CAN make it so that Omastar, AA-J, AIIIIIRR, AATTVVV, AAAAAAAAAA, and aaabaaajss become Red's final team. It is very much the hope of The Hivemind, the viewers, the reddit commenters, and myself, that this happens.

Personally, I DO want to see the lore come to a closing. I really want the story to come to a close, so that if there is a third generation run of TPP with Ruby, Saphire, or Emerald, there will be a new lore (I can't think of any link, story-wise, off the top of my head). And besides, a closing of what I am officially calling The Helix Cycle will serve to bring a satisfying resolution to the stories created. It just won't be the same if we don' t *SEE* AJ take down Helix.

But the most likely outcome is that we won't, and it will be thoroughly disappointing.
